It is an agreement between the lower 48 states in the United States and the Canadian provinces that simplifies the reporting of fuel taxes for carriers operating in multiple jurisdictions. • Truckers who operate in multiple states or provinces are required to report their fuel usage and pay taxes based on the fuel consumed in each jurisdiction. With IFTA, truckers only have to file one fuel tax report that covers all of the jurisdictions where they operated during the quarter. • To comply with IFTA reporting requirements, truckers must keep detailed records of their fuel purchases and usage for each vehicle they operate. This includes the number of miles driven in each jurisdiction and the amount of fuel purchased in each jurisdiction. • At the end of each calendar quarter, truckers must file an IFTA tax return with their base jurisdiction. The return reports the total amount of fuel consumed in each jurisdiction and calculates the amount of tax due or refund owed based on the tax rates of each jurisdiction. • Truckers who fail to comply with IFTA reporting requirements may face penalties, including fines and the loss of their IFTA license. Therefore, it is important for truckers to maintain accurate and up-to-date records and file their IFTA tax returns on time.
