This is Hormoz Mogarei, Get Kaizened, Incorporated. Today I like to have an elementary look at kaizen, the concept and its definition. • Kaizen is the Japanese word which is comprised of two different words, kai and zen . Kai means change and zen means good, so the translation is change is good or change for the better or a different definition for kaizen is continuous improvement incrementally. It is very popular and effective because you're talking about incremental improvement. So it's very easy for everyone to do it. • If I were to lose 50 pounds over the weekend, it would be rather impossible. Losing eight ounces per day will be more achievable. Kaizen is supposed to be simple, quick and inexpensive. Because it's a concept, and because it's a philosophy, it's applicable to all businesses and everything that we do. • To give you a couple of examples in regular daily life, next time that you sit in your car, in order to find out if you are kaizen-minded or you're not, pay attention to whether or not you turn on the ignition first and then do the seatbelt or fasten your seatbelt first, adjust your seat, the mirrors if necessary, and then start the ignition. • Now you might be asking, What's the difference? The difference is a few gallons of gasoline that you won't burn unnecessarily, if we do it the correct way. • Normally people don't pay attention to the small things. Normally people say, What's the difference? They let it slide and that attitude can be devastating. Kaizen says pay attention to details and only improve it incrementally but do it regularly. Do it regularly so you can see the tangible benefits over time. • So next time you sit in your car, make sure you will adjust your seatbelt first before you start the ignition. • Second example is your household. If you're working in the kitchen, and let's say you have to remove the garbage, throw it out, and also make some hot tea for yourself. Well one way will be to take the garbage out, throw it in the trash cash. You come back and wash your hands, pour the water in your glass or your cup. Put it in the microwave and wait for the microwave oven to boil the water. • The other way, the kaizen way, is to put the water in the microwave first. Turn it on, go throw the garbage, come back, wash your hands and the water will be ready. • The difference is only changing the sequence of events. That difference is called kaizen. The first way you will have to wait for the microwave oven for two minutes or so and for the water to boil and perhaps you will even claim that you don't have enough time to do everything. • The second way, you're working at the same speed, doing the same tasks only in different sequence and as a result, you gain two minutes. • I hope I will see you in our next videos and I hope until then, you will study all the efforts that you are doing on a daily basis and try to make an incremental improvement to each and every one of them. Good day. • Key Terms: • Kaizen • Continuous Improvement • Introduction to Kaizen • Improvement • Kaizen Philosophy • Lean Manufacturing • Lean Management • Lean • Kaizen Training • Kaizen Consulting
