How to safely serve corn for babies • 6 – 8 months • If you choose not to start with finger foods, you can offer creamed corn (lightly blended) on a spoon. • If possible, around 7-8 months transition to offering corn in pieces, as shown below. • 6 – 11 months • Sweet corn is an excellent food to offer babies to help them develop chewing skills. You can even offer to babies those who don’t have their teeth yet! • However, whole kernels of corn can be a choking hazard so it’s important to prepare it adequately. • Once the corn has been cooked on the cob, use a knife to cut through the middle of the kernels (as shown in the image below). This way, the kernels will be stuck to the cob, and baby can just gnaw at it and suck out the juices. • Then cut the cob into smaller rounds with 3 to 4 rows each, so baby can easily hold on to them. • 12 months + • After your baby turns 1, you can keep on offering the corn on the cob without cutting through the kernels. • Frozen corn is also a very practical option. Depending on your child's chewing development the kernels can still pose as a risk. It's important to cook them until soft. If your child is still transitioning to whole finger foods you may consider smashing them if needed. • Canned corn is also a shelf-stable practical option, just try to look for lower sodium versions or rinse prior to offering to reduce sodium amounts. However, if baby is 1 year it is less of a concern. • For more tips, download the BLW Meals App for free. Available on Apple Store and Google Play: https://blwmeals.app.link/zfOaEXfrXdb
