2D Echocardiogram of a severe dilated cardiomyopathy with severe decreased ejection fraction. • Ischemic cardiomyopathy is a type of cardiomyopathy caused by a narrowing of the coronary arteries which supply blood to the heart.Typically, patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy have a history of acute myocardial infarction, however, it may occur in patients with coronary artery disease, but without a past history of acute myocardial infarction. This cardiomyopathy is one of the leading causes of sudden cardiac death. • Tips For Evaluation Ischemic Cardiomyopathy In Echocardiography: • 1. Obtain multiple views • 2. Expect segmental wall motion abnormalities • 3. Evaluate systolic wall thickness. • 4. Look for thin, bright akinetic wall segments • 5. Spontaneous echo contrast may be seen • Symptoms of Ischemic Cardiomyopathy • from: http://www.nytimes.com/health/guides/... • Patients with this condition often have had symptoms of angina or a heart attack. Sometimes, patients do not notice any symptoms. • Symptoms of heart failure usually develop slowly over time. Common symptoms include: • Cough • Fatigue, weakness, faintness • Irregular or fast pulse, or a sensation of feeling the heart beat (palpitations) • Loss of appetite • Shortness of breath, especially with activity • Shortness of breath that occurs after lying down • Swelling of feet and ankles (in adults) • Swelling of the abdomen (in adults) • Waking up from sleep after a couple of hours due to shortness of breath. • Definitions: • Akinesis: A slowness or loss of normal motor function resulting in impaired muscle movement. • Ischemia: deficient supply of blood to a body part (as the heart or brain) that is due to obstruction of the inflow of arterial blood (as by the narrowing of arteries by spasm or disease)
