On April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin made history by completing the first orbit of Earth in space aboard the Vostok I spacecraft. Gagarin's historic flight lasted barely 108 minutes until he intentionally evacuated from the spaceship and parachuted back to Earth. This event profoundly altered the way humans view the cosmos.
