Autumn in Montréal Part 5

On the final day of my October trip to Montréal, I went on a hop on/hop off Gray Line bus tour -- something I hadn't done for years in the city. • Monsieur Fort -- my affectionate name for our tuque-clad tour guide -- was informative, hip and hilarious ... and very loud. An almost winning combination. As the big red bus squeezed through a narrow street past the bronze monument of King Edward VII -- which stands at the rear of Phillips Square in le Centre-Ville -- either Monsieur Fort's irreverent joke about Queen Victoria's long reign didn't go over well with the new batch of passengers, or he had blown out their eardrums soon after they'd boarded the bus. • I was the only passenger not covering my ears.🙉 The necessity of holding my camera wasn't the only reason, though. Two situations early in life had prepared me for a double-loop ride on the loud bus while my fellow passengers repeatedly begged Monsieur Fort not to breach the sound barrier: • First, there was my upbringing by a father who was a lamp factory foreman that constantly yelled at workers over clanging machinery - which he often conveyed to me every other day, shouting for emphasis. Second, I commuted to and from high school in Hell's Kitchen via Lucifer's Express a.k.a. the dimly lighted MTA subway, with beaten-up trains banging up and down delapidated tracks, wild-eyed wackos on acid screaming from one car to another, horny vagrants shrieking their climaxes on platform benches, and boomboxes blasting while breakdancers' head and backspins inadvertently wiped up the subway cars' grimy floors. • Regarding King Edward VII (1901-1910), he visited Montréal in 1860 and opened the Victoria Bridge -- named in honor of his mother, Queen Victoria (1819-1901). The designer of the King Edward VII monument, erected in 1914, was Louis-Philippe Hébert. Phillips Square was opened to the public in 1842. • Please stay tuned for more images from the Gray Line bus tour. Thank you for watching ... and for listening safely, without earbuds or a headset.💋 • • #montrealcitytour #grayline #tourbus #hoponhopoff #montreal #autumncolor #fallfoliage #downtownmontreal #phillipssquare #queenvictoria #kingedward #kingedwardvii
