The traditional interpretation of Genesis 1:26 held by the early church fathers, medieval theologians, and the vast majority of Christians up to and through the Reformation period is that the plural language is a reference to the the triune God and to man as God's created image bearer. It has become increasingly popular to reject this interpretation in favor of seeing it as another reference to the divine council. A popular exponent of this interpretation is Dr. Michael Heiser.
