It's one of four surviving examples of that railroad's S-4's which were 40 4-6-0 Ten-wheeler types built by Burnham, Williams Co, an early incarnation of Baldwin Locomotive works in 1902 for pulling the North Coast Limited between Missoula, Montana and Spokane, Washington. But overtime these locomotives were demoted to mixed freight and lower class passenger service in the Missoula area and to Wallace Idaho as larger ones like pacific types(4-6-2) arrived to take over the increasing work loads. • The S-4's were originally Vulcan compounds but rebuilt into to only have two outside slanted cylinders in 1917 due to the tech's complexity. Other modifications including increased tender capacity, different pilots, and NP's signature style of center mounted headlights with the top-protruding number board. • 1356 was famously used to rescue families from a wildfire in the American Northwest in 1910, taking families from Idaho to safety in Missoula. She worked through floods, through snow slides, and finally a wreck on the Bitterroot River in 1943. By 1955 the 1356 had been given to the city of Missoula and placed on static display at the NP's depot there after Ron Nixon convinced them to save the S-4. She hasn't moved since and is looking rough. Friends of 1356 and the city are working to one day give the engine a cosmetic restoration. • Follow me on Instagram: / andrew_al_bammers • Check out my second channel: / @andrewbts1226 • My Deviant Art: https://www.deviantart.com/ak80urails... • My discord server: / discord • Check out my Patreon Page: / andrewrailabammers
