Do You Want To Protect Monarch Butterflies This Plant Should Be Removed

It is well known that monarchs are endangered. They think black swallow wort (Cynanchum louiseae) is a good plant to lay their eggs on and since milkweed is the ONLY plant monarch caterpillars can eat (it’s their “host” plant), when the caterpillars emerge and they can’t eat these leaves, they have no food so they cannot survive. It also produces toxins in the soil that kills other plants around it. This facilitates its spread. Get rid of black swallow wort as soon as possible if you have it. It is invasive in many parts of North America, though native in parts of Europe, and it spreads prolifically. It’s in the same family as milkweed but they are very different. For removal you have to get all of the roots. Pulling by hand is the only way to go unless you just have too much of it. Consult with a university agricultural extension program about how to control or remove it. • Videos are done by clients in their yards and this was done by Natalia. • About me: I’m a garden coach and consultant in zone 6 in the Boston area but almost all of the principles I talk about are applicable to any garden.
