How To Bisque Fire A Manual Kiln

I hope this helps those of you who are unsure how to operate a manual kiln! It is easy if you follow these instructions! • Please comment if you would like an instructional video of how to glaze fire in a manual kiln. • DETAILED FIRING INSTRUCTIONS: • Step 1: Load your kiln making sure to pack the pieces evenly while still allowing a small amount of room for air flow between each piece. Pieces may be stacked as long as they do not trap any air in between themselves. • Step 2: Check all shelves and posts to make sure there is no wobble. Failure to do so can result in shelves collapsing during firing (and possibly ruining your stuff) • Step 3: Load bisque temp cone into kiln sitter in the same way as demonstrated in the video. Bisque temps cones usually range between 04-06 if you glaze fire to cone 6. A bisque temp allows your pieces to partially harden and also allows for the glaze to be soaked up during glazing. For more info on bisque temps and cones look here: • https://www2.bellevuecollege.edu/arts... • Your bisque temp cone may be different if you are doing a low or high fire application. • Step 4: turn all dials in kiln sitter to LOW for at least 2 hours to ensure all moisture evaporates from pieces. If you fail to do this, there could be an explosion in the kiln of one of your pieces. I usually leave my kiln on low overnight to prevent this from happening. • NEVER LEAVE A KILN UNATTENDED! • Step 5: Ramp temp by turning all dials to MEDIUM for at least 2 hours. • Step 6: If your kiln is still on, after 2 hours on medium, ramp by switching dials to HIGH until the kiln shuts off. • Allow 8-12 (or more if needed) hours to cool. Do not attempt to open a hot kiln. This may ruin your pieces or cause injury. • My patreon: / zceramic • Creative Commons music.
