https://www.okanmusica.com • The title track of the sophomore release by Afro-Cuban roots and jazz ensemble OKAN, Espiral explores the dualities of contemporary and traditional, city and country, exile and rebirth, secular and sacred. • The album as a whole delves deeper into the group's Cuban roots, finding renewed inspiration in this rich musical heritage. The Santeria influences are most evident in this title track which uniquely blends guajira, the folk genre of Eastern Cuba, with Santeria-derived chants. • The chant that inspires the piece comes from the lesser known Arará sect of the Santeria religion (as opposed to the Lucumi) and is associated with the orisha Babalu Aye who was syncretized in Cuba with Saint Lazarus, whose story of exile and rebirth resonates with the composers as immigrants from Cuba to Canada. amp;#039; • The video was a labour of love that grew out of a collaboration between the Creative Director/ Producer for the piece, Kathleen Ryan and OKAN leaders Elizabeth Rodriguez and Magdelys Savigne. Blessed by a surprise rainbow at the end of the shoot, which took place several months into the COVID lockdown, the colorful imagery captures the magic of a day and the theme of rebirth explored in the song amp;#039;s lyrics. • • Musicians: • Elizabeth Rodriguez: vocals, violin • Magdelys Savigne: vocals, percussion • Roberto Riveron: bass • Frank Martinez: drums • Miguel de Armas: piano • Roberto Riveron Tamayo • Pablosky Rosales: tres guitar • Kathleen Ryan – Executive Producer and Creative Director • Harb Singh - Director • Charlotte Ryan - Associate Director and Creative Producer • Lucille Villamor - Production Manager • Nick Tessier - Director of Photography and Steadi Camera Operator • Adam Warren - Lighting Designer • Ken Yan - Editor • Cam Roden - Camera Operator • Paula Perri - Production Assistant • Ruby Sealy - Stylist • Dance and Choreography: Dailyn Martinez • Wardrobe and Makeup: Tracy Ekubor • Photography: Ksenija Hotic • Lyrical Advisor: Dayan Ogbelara • • Thank you to Craig Milne and Colin Maitland, SIM International • Thank you to DUO Aerial • Created with support from  FACTOR, Toronto Arts Council, Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council and Lulaworld Records / Lula Music and Arts. • https://www.lulaworldrecords.ca/ • • ©2020 OKAN.
