Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS) also referred to as Oral Aphthous ulcers or even oral ulcers - is a common oral condition characterized by the repeated appearance of small, painful ulcers on the mucous membranes inside the mouth, these include the tongue, cheeks, and lips. • I'm trialing different styles of presentation for students, if you're a student or anyone who found this helpful or unhelpful, please let me know by commenting or even emailing me at [email protected] • Please subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@dentogenesis... • I appreciate you watching! • The exact cause of RAS is not fully understood, but it is believed to be multifactorial, involving genetic, immunological, and environmental factors, like malnutrition and stress. • There are three types of RAS: minor, major, and herpetiform: • Minor RAS is the most common form and typically presents with small, round ulcers that heal within 1-2 weeks without scarring. They appear most commonly in the anterior region of the mouth. • Major RAS is less common and can result in larger, deeper ulcers that can take several weeks to heal and may leave scars. They are greater than 10mm in diameter. • Herpetiform RAS is the least common type and presents with multiple, small, and painful ulcers that can coalesce to form larger ulcers. Whilst they can be present anywhere in the mouth, they are most commonly present on the lateral margins and ventral surfaces of the tongue and the floor of the mouth. • The correct diagnosis of RAS is dependent on a detailed clinical history and examination of the ulcers. This includes the assessment of the age of onset, the number of ulcers, size of ulcers, duration, site, and presence of scarring. • There is no cure for RAS, but treatment principles rely on addressing the underlying causes if they are known, or through symptom relief such as topical anesthetics or anti-inflammatory agents such as topical corticosteroids. • Follow Me On: • Facebook: / dentogenesiss • Instagram: / dentogenesis • Please subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@dentogenesis... • #dentogenesis • #oralcancer • #oralsquamouscellcarcinoma • #oralhealth • #oralcancerawareness • #cancerprevention • #oralcancersupport • #earlydetectionsaveslives • #mouthcancer • #oralcancersymptoms • #oralcancertreatment • #oralcancerresearch • #oralcancersurvivor • #oralhealthmatters • #oralcancereducation • #oralcancerawarenessmonth • #oralhealthcare • #screeningfororalcancer • #smokingandcancer • #hpvandcancer • #oralcancerresources
