Congratulations to Professor Higgs for winning the Nobel Prize today! • http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-env... • Higgs boson scientists win Nobel prize in physics • 8 October 2013 • Peter Higgs, from the UK, and Francois Englert from Belgium, shared the prize. • In the 1960s they were among several physicists who proposed a mechanism to explain why the most basic building blocks of the Universe have mass. • The mechanism predicts a particle - the Higgs boson - which was finally discovered in 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider at Cern, in Switzerland. • This year's prize is about something small that makes all the difference, said Staffan Normark, permanent secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. • ___________________________________________ • BBC News Content • July 4 2012 • Scientists at CERN the world's largest particle physics laboratory have made one of the most important scientific breakthroughs of modern times. Physicists believe they have finally identified the Particle known as the Higgs Boson. It should be an enormous step towards explaining how atoms have mass and how the universe is bound together. It's a discovery about the fabric of the universe that will go down as one of the greatest in science. • Researchers have found the key to matter in this circular tunnel, a new kind of particle. As predicted by Peter Higgs, a British scientist at Edinburgh University. Scientists hunted for the Higgs Boson by firing particles through the tunnel and forcing them to collide to reveal their inner workings. This is about a very basic quest. To understand what the universe is made of how from empty space we get the planets and us. • This involves digging into atoms, deeper and deeper to reveal the incredibly small parts inside them so tiny it's not clear how they have any kind of substance. That's where the Higgs Boson comes in - a particle that acts like glue, giving other particles mass. • • Professor Brian Cox - • It's like saying we want to explore that ocean but we don't know where the land is we want to explore.
