In my final part of the Synology DS918+ coverage I go through the setup of the DSM OS and the minor snags that I ran into while setting the NAS up. • I had installed and setup the box at the start of December 2017, today when I have went to edit the video together, I have realised that I have accidentally deleted sometime ago the main part of the setup footage. This is frustrating as I am unable to re film this. What I have done instead is document below the required setup steps. As well as other relevant setup links. • Live demo of the Synology DSM 6.2 • -------------------------------------------------- • To use a 30 minute trial of the Synology operating system, go to the Synology website on the following link • • https://demo.synology.com/en-us • Synology DS918+ DSM setup • -------------------------------- • If you have followed my video, you will have made sure that your network is pre-configured for the DS918+, and that the speed throughout your network, or between your Synology and PC is a Gigabit connection for fast transfer speeds. • When you are ready power on the NAS, on a pc connected to your network, type into a web browser of your choice either find.synology.com or diskstation:5000. The web assistant will locate the the NAS, all you have to do then is click the connect button. • Once you have done this, you will be shown a screen telling you that you are going to install the Disk station Manager (DSM) on the disks that you have just fitted. Go ahead and click the green install now button. A warning will pop up explaining that all data on the hard disks is about to be wiped. You will be forced to tick a check box to say that you agree with this, when done click OK. • The disk-station will then start formatting the disks, downloading and installing the DSM, and getting the OS ready for first run. • The first screen that you will be greeted with is to setup the administrator account and server details. Fill out the information. There is a check box that you can tick or untick depending if you want to share your network location with Synology or not? When you are ready click next. • The next screen after a small configuration that you will be greeted with, is the DSM update and Maintenance settings. I chose to download DSM updates and install them manually so I have full control over the system. I also made sure that I checked the Run S.M.A.R.T tests and Enable bad sector warnings for drives. • You will then be greeted with a screen asking you to setup QuickConnect. You do not have to do this and this step can be skipped. QuickConnect can create a special ID that can be used to connect to your Synology outside of your network without you having to setup port forwarding. Please be aware that if you set this up, your synology will be open to the internet. If you do not want your NAS to be accessible to the internet I suggest you skip this step. • Finally one of the last setup screens, asks if you want to install the default suite of apps, I skipped this step as some of the applications I would not use and there is no point bloating out your new device. • Once your logged into your NAS one of the first things you need to do before you setup the raid configuration is to make sure that DSM is upto date, as there is most likely a few updates to install. This will be highlighted by an action number by either the package centre or control panel icon. Simply follow the instructions to get your NAS updated. • Now that everything is updated, you are going to open the stoage manager. The quickest way to access this is to open up package centre and try and update the file station application. When you do this it will warn you that there are no volumes, and it will ask if you would like to open the storage manager. Click ok. • Click on Volume, and then click create volume. I selected the quick radio button as I wanted to use SHR with BTRFS. Make sure that all the disks in your system are selected and then click next. You will again be warned that any data apart from the DSM will be erased from the disks. Now you need to choose how many disk failures you would like to protect against in your system 1 or 2. I chose SHR-1 so I had more disk space. On the next option screen i chose Btrfs. If you are unsure what to pick click the link below for a guide on the file systems • https://www.synology.com/en-uk/knowle... • Go through the next screens, I just clicked next and then apply. The process will then start setting up the raid array. Depending on the disks that you have used this could take some time. Once finished the system will be setup and ready to start installing applications and creating shares for your files. • If you would like to support my channel use the affiliate links below • Synology DS918+ - https://amzn.to/2D0uopX • WD Red 6TB NAS Drive - https://amzn.to/2NYAIzf • TP-LINK 5 Port Gigabit Switch - https://amzn.to/2JbGKM4
