Launching Water Rockets with Air Only vs Air and Water

Will Air Only even work with water rocket launchers? In this video we test out 3 different type launchers: O-ring, collar, and nozzle employing the same 2-liter soda bottle equipped with StratoFins. All launchers perform surprisingly well with Air Only at various PSI levels and yield some respectable altitudes. However, after adding a mere 200 ml (less than 1 cup), the apogee results are almost doubled for some flights. We learn two principles from this experiment: 1) a small amount of water yields significant increase in altitude and 2) the fun doesn’t have to stop when the water runs out in the field.
