Toyota GR86: The end of an era - probably • Let CarGurus help you find your next car: • https://www.cargurus.co.uk/Cars/artic... • For years, Toyota didn't really bother making sports cars, choosing instead to concentrate on selling its high-volume mainstay of sensible hatchbacks and SUVs. In the last few years, however, the Japanese firm has sought to reverse that decision, and you have to say, it's been done rather successfully. In a motoring world that's moving rapidly towards an electric future, cars like the rally-inspired GR Yaris homologation special, not to mention the Supra muscle car, are cars that many might be surprised that Toyota ever bothered to make, and cars the like of which will probably never be made again. • The car that started that sports car resurgence for Toyota was the GT86, a lightweight, rear-drive sports coupe with skiddy low-grip tyres and a rev-hungry naturally aspirated engine. The new GR86, the car that replaces it, is closely related to its forbear mechanically, but it has been fettled in a variety of areas to deliver a bit more in each of them. The engine has grown in size to 2.4 litres, with the flat-four unit now pushing out 231bhp, not to mention more torque than before. It now has a set of stickier tyres to make it a bit more secure in the corners, too, and the interior and exterior styling has been given a substantial overhaul. And despite the fact that this car brand new, it's entirely likely that emissions regulations will probably mean that it's with us no more than a couple of years before it, too, is consigned to motoring history. Will that be enough time for Toyota to make a profit on the investment they put in? It’s rather noisy at high speeds and the interior is sensible and comfortable, but not particularly pretty or classy. But we still adore this car because it is so simple, fun and uncomplicated. It’s perfect for British roads, being compact enough, light enough and just powerful enough to feel like you’re really using most of its potential without risking your licence. It’s also more than thrilling enough to warrant the occasional track day, yet it won’t cost a fortune to buy and run, and is practical and comfortable enough to be used as a daily commuter. • In short, the Toyota GR86 feels like one of the best expressions of a simple, uncomplicated, affordable sports car that has become almost extinct.
