Fixing Kohler toilet Fluidmaster fill valve wheezing noise

My 20 year plus Kohler toilet makes a wheezing noise when the tank is refilled with water. Instead of replacing the whole assembly, you can try cleaning out the fill valve assembly. • Before you begin, turn off the shutoff valve under the toilet tank. You can expect the shutoff valve to leak after making the repair, even if you don't use them often or at all. Know where your main shut off valve is for the house or apartment in case you have to make repair to the toilet shut off valve. • Remove the top part of the fill assembly by pressing down and turning counterclockwise for 1/8 turn. If the top assembly does not turn easily, reach in with your left hand and hold the tube while you are turning the cap on the top. The top can now be removed and the rubber piece inside cleaned. Clean the seat as well. Flush out the fill unit by putting a cup over the tube and slowly turning the water back on. Let the water flow for half a minute and then turn off the water at shutoff valve. Reinstall the top part by pressing down and turning the top part 1/8 turn clockwise. Turn the water back on and check if the wheezing or whining noise is abated. If the fill or water flow rate is extremely slow, you can take out the spiral water restrictor at the base of the tube. The restrictor is there if you have high water pressure and the restrictor will prevent water hammer. Removing the restrictor involves unscrewing the whole unit from the tank, which is not covered in this video. • If the shutoff valve leaks at the packing nut, tightening the nut will generally do the trick. • The part number for the Fluidmaster rubber toilet fill valve seal is 400A or 275 and is available for less than $3.
