Got out on the Maumee River during the 2023 Walleye Run and figured I would share my insight on how to catch more walleye this year. • It's been a solid year, and this video was shot at the end of March when the males were just starting to show up and come in thick in the river. • In this video, I share some basics on how to fish the Maumee River during the walleye run, what gear you should use (rod, reel, line, leader, etc.), and what your terminal tackle looks like (jigs, weights, grubs). • ➡️ If you found this helpful, be sure to subscribe for more! • WEATHER CONDITIONS • Weather conditions for this day were in the low to mid-40s all day, got more relaxed as the afternoon progressed, and the winds were light. • RIVER CONDITIONS • The water temperature was low 40s, and the water height was 583-584. I always like to start with shorter casts to target the first seam and closer in when the water is higher and moving fast, as I feel the walleye may be hunkered down in shallower parts to stay out of the fast flowing current. From there, I will then work further out. This, of course, can be tricky if you are shoulder to shoulder with people throwing farther out (often need to match what they are to not cross lines). • WEIGHTS AND RIGGING • River wasn't flowing too heavily, so I started with a 5/8th weight but then threw on a 3/4 oz to get out further after I fished the closer seams to death and wanted to reach more of the middle sections the river. I ran 5-6' fluoro leader to my jig head, no swivels. • JIG AND GRUB COLORS • My go-to colors are pink, orange, and green (not chartreuse, but green). I will mix and match these and sometimes throw the floating jig without a grub tail. If I get many snags, I may throw on a seat to avoid exposing the hook. I also prefer a smaller jig head and tail; see how that does first before sizing up. • ROD, REEL, AND LINE • My reel is a 4000 Shimano. I run a 7ft medium power, fast action spinning rod. I always run a 20lb brain main line on this reel (even for bass and pike). My leader was 5-6ft on average, and I used a 12lb fluoro leader. • GEAR LINKS • 12lb Fluorocarbon Leader - https://amzn.to/3HkVZSH • 20lb Braid - https://amzn.to/3GV4ceU • Shimano Nexave 4000 - https://amzn.to/3ZvdAgE • Shimano Stimula Rod - https://amzn.to/3Kryvgh • Net - https://amzn.to/3ZvfNIY • Waders - https://amzn.to/3K7j3Vi
