UPDATE ON MERRYN - THE MOST HEARTBREAKING RESCUE DOG WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED • After saving the lives of more than 65,000 animals over the past 20 years… it happened. Last week we met the most heartbreaking dog we have ever encountered. • We immediately sent her story out because it was evident that Merryn needed emergency medical care if we were to have any chance at saving her life. Our supporters came through and enabled us to take her to a state of the art 24 hour emergency clinic. Merryn received a full work up including x-rays, bloodwork, and a consultation with their medical team. • Once all of the diagnostics were completed, we reviewed the results with the veterinarians. Merryn’s condition was even more heartbreaking than we ever could have imagined. Her left leg is broken in several places and has a serious infection. It is so bad and has been left for so long that it is beyond repair. Her right ankle is broken and, because of the way it has started to heal on its own, has no chance of ever supporting weight. Both of her knees have “fragments” of bone caused by her dragging her body before she learned, out of necessity to avoid pain, to walk on her front legs. Her jaw is broken in several places and the bone is dying. The jaw bone exposed to air is of particular concern. • The infection in the dying bones throughout her body is life threatening and on the verge of causing systemic sepsis. We’ve spent the last few days trying to wrap our heads around the gravity of her condition. • We spoke at length with her veterinarian about options. Specifically, we spoke about quality of life. When we assess a dog’s quality of life, we look at several factors. Merryn is eating. Her tail never stops wagging. She actively seeks affection from everyone she meets. She has control over her bowels and bladder and “holds it'' until the team takes her outside. She looks forward to spending time with people. And now that she has a pain management plan, her pain is under control. At the same time, her injuries are truly overwhelming. • In almost any other situation, we would have expected a dog with Merryn’s injuries to be shut down and humane euthanasia to be the kindest option. But when you meet Merryn, you know she isn’t ready to give up. We don’t know if we can save her, but we have to try! • This week, Merryn will remain hospitalized and on medications in an effort to get the infection under control in hopes that she becomes a candidate for surgery. Our team will also be working to build her up nutritionally so that she can handle the complicated surgeries ahead of her. • The Wright-Way Rescue team has all fallen in love with this incredible dog. They are rotating shifts to sit beside her and keep her company this week. • If we are successful, and her labs come back better, the emergency clinic will remove her badly broken and infected left rear leg and the broken and dying parts of her lower jaw. A feeding tube will be placed to support her nutritionally for 4 weeks while she recovers. • We are still trying to understand how anyone could have allowed a dog to remain in this condition with no medical care. We were told that at one point, a week after the attack, she was taken to a local veterinarian. The veterinarian’s treatment plan, which involved immediate surgery or humane euthanasia, was refused. The owners did take oral medication for her, but it could not be administered due to her broken jaw. The remaining puppies from the property have now been transferred to our care. We have also arranged to spay the two dogs that the owners would not surrender to us. The medical records we obtained are being supplied to the local authorities for review. • Merryn has a will to live that is undeniable. We are very thankful to you for allowing us to give her every opportunity to live the life she so deserves. • Funds are still needed to make Merryn’s expert medical care and surgeries possible.
