Welcome to Part 1 of the Life of a Camshaft series! Today, we’re in the workshop with Blythe, who’s in charge of cutting our billet blanks to prepare them for the CNC lathe. This is where the journey of every Kelford camshaft begins. • Blythe takes us through the process of transforming a 6-meter-long bar into precise cam blanks. Let’s break it down step by step: • Chapters: • 0:00 Introduction – Meet Blythe and the CNC bandsaw • 0:45 The Billet Cutting Process – How raw material becomes a cam blank • 1:30 The First Cut – Removing the crimped end for precision • 2:15 Cutting to Exact Measurements – Preparing the camshaft blanks • 2:45 Batch Completion – Counting and prepping for the CNC lathe • 3:10 What’s Next? – The next stage in camshaft production • 3:45 Thank You, Blythe! • How Camshaft Blanks Are Made • Blythe starts with a 6-meter-long bar, the raw material that will become a Kelford camshaft. Here’s how the process works: • 1. Preparing the Material: • Blythe slides the billet bar into the CNC bandsaw and programs the precise measurements required for each camshaft blank. • The first cut removes around 40–50 mm from the bar to eliminate the crimped end left by the manufacturer. This ensures a perfect starting point for the rest of the process. • 2. Precision Cutting: • Once the initial cut is complete, the machine measures and cuts the rest of the bar into individual blanks. Each piece is carefully sized to match the exact specifications needed for the next step. • 3. Batch Completion: • After all the blanks are cut, Blythe counts the entire batch to ensure everything is accounted for. • 4. Next Steps: • The blanks are sent over to the CNC lathe team, where they’ll be machined into the camshafts you know and trust. • The Importance of Precision • Cutting billet blanks may be the first step in the camshaft production process, but it’s also one of the most critical. A perfectly cut blank ensures accuracy and efficiency during CNC machining, setting the foundation for the high-performance camshafts Kelford is known for. • Meet the Team • A big thank you to Blythe for walking us through the billet cutting process and sharing their expertise. This behind-the-scenes look is just the beginning of our Life of a Camshaft series, where we’ll take you through every stage of how we make industry-leading camshafts. • Stay Tuned for More • This is only the start of the journey! Keep an eye out for Part 2, where we dive into the CNC lathe process. Make sure to like, comment, and subscribe for more insights into camshaft production, the latest innovations, and tips for getting the most out of your engine. • At Kelford Cams, we’re all about Precision. Performance. Perfection. Let’s make horsepower together!
