He held the IBF Bantamweight title between July 1988 and December 1994. He is the younger brother of fellow Bantamweight world champion Gaby Canizales. Both brothers obtained the title of world boxing champion at the same age and weight. Orlando tied the division record for consecutive title defences at 15 set by Manuel Ortiz. Canizales was an excellent fighter who used creative angles and shifts to confuse his opponents.
