As Rome emerged from the tyranny of kingship into the birth of a young republic, it faced enemies from all sides. But there was conflict within as well, as the poorer class of plebeians realised that they couldn't continue living as they did under the yoke of their patrician overlords. • So for centuries, the ancient roman plebeians fought for their political and economic rights - going so far as to secede from the republic entirely.
