One of the most iconic photographs of the Pacific war was that of raising the flag on Iwo Jima February 23rd of 1945. Amidst heavy fighting, six Marines hoisted the American flag atop Mount Suribachi, the island's highest point. Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal captured the moment earning the Pulitzer Prize. The photo became a powerful symbol of American valor and sacrifice. However, the iconic photo was actually taken of the second flag-raising atop Mount Suribachi. The first flag was raised at 10:30am was photographed by staff Sergeant Louis Lowery amongst others. Secretary of Navy, James Forrestal decided he wanted the flag as a souvenir stating “the raising of that flag on Suribachi means a Marine Corps for the next five hundred years . Furious the Marine corps refused him, so Forrestal ordered a second larger flag to be raised with a photo taken. • #fypシ #fyp #history #documentary #war #wwii #ww2 #pacificwar #pacificwarchannel #usmc #usmarines
