Every year in November, Thai Monkey City, officially named Lopburi, celebrates its furry citizens with a gigantic feast. • Lopburi Monkey Banquet Festival has been around since 1989, thanks to the initiative of local hotelier Yongyuth Kitwatananusont, and his friend, art professor Wibool Chanyam. They decided to throw monkeys an annual party, complete with fruit, vegetables and sweets buffet. • While feeding sessions still happen at Phra Prang Sam Yod (the Monkey Temple), and neighboring San Phra Karn, the majority of Lopburi's monkey population does not live in the center of Lopburi anymore. • Decades of monkey heaven had to finish after the overpopulation of long-tailed macaques started causing problems to Lopburi citizens. Think monkey wars, theft, and aggressive behavior, especially in the years of pandemic, when tourists stopped being the usual feeders. • In 2024, more than two thousand monkeys have been captured and removed from the streets to the enclosure of the Lopburi Municipality Animal Shelter. • Only a couple hundred monkeys still reside in Lopburi city center, getting more than a fair share of Lopburi Monkey Banquet. • Learn more about Lopburi Monkey Festival here: https://www.pipeaway.com/lopburi-monk... • Video: Ivan Kralj
