Ancient Chinese wisdom meets the Great American Songbook in Jake Baxendale’s ‘Waypeople’. This multi-movement work, a commission of the 2023 Wellington Jazz Festival, draws on the Ursula Le Guin translation of Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching. As communicated by the startling voice of Chelsea Prastiti, the music, “runs across the emotional spectrum, from reverential to irreverent, light hearted to deathly serious.” • Stand by for SOUNZ Films from the world premiere of Waypeople, shot at Wellington’s Meow, with audio recorded by our friends at RNZ Concert (who will be broadcasting the entire concert tonight on Music Alive from 8pm).
