BELA Act submission deadline extended

Civil Society group on schooling matters Equal Education (EE) says proposed changes by the Department of Basic Education on the Norms and Standards for Public School Infrastructure are drastic and unacceptable. EE says the draft amendments published in the Government Gazette on June 10 are undermining the right to basic education, and if the amendments go through, schools will fall apart with no accountability. According to EE, the department wants to totally remove the deadlines set for the government to get rid of pit latrines and provide basics such as water, electricity, classrooms, fences and libraries. Meanwhile, the portfolio committee on Education has extended the deadline for submissions on the Basic Education Laws Amendment (Bela) Bill to August 15.
