That was Benny Goodman, and he got to be that way from leading a quartet with Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson and Gene Krupa — jazz's first major mixed-race band. In a special stage show written by Geoffrey Ward and narrated by Wendell Pierce, a young band with a rotating cast of clarinetists tells the whole story at Jazz at Lincoln Center. • Jazz Night In America learns about the history of the Benny Goodman Quartet, onstage from The Appel Room. • SKIP TO: • Wendell Pierce Intro - 1:06 • Sweet Georgia Brown - 7:11 • Hiring a Colored Boy of Great Talent - 13:00 • Who - 17:22 • Wendell 3 - 22:01 • Opus 1/2 - 23:56 • Wendell 4 - 31:40 • Moonglow - 35:20 • Recorded March 5, 2016 @ Jazz at Lincoln Center • Script written by Geoffrey C.
