This temple is one of the 44 Paadal Petra Sthalams where all Moovars have contributed their pathigams. • • History of Sri Vadaranyeswarar Temple • • The village where the temple lies was earlier known as Pazhayanur, and the place where the temple is located was called Alangadu. The temple is very ancient and believed to have been built during the Chola and Pallava dynasties in the 12th century. Some inscriptions date back to the 5th century. The temple encases stone inscriptions dating back to the reign of King Paranthaka Chola I to the last ruler of Vijayanagaram. • Legend of Sri Vadaranyeswarar Temple • According to a legend associated with this temple, two demons Sumban and Nisumban, worshipped Shiva to seek his blessings. Due to their intense penance, Shiva granted them a boon that every drop of their blood would become a Lingam. However, they started terrorizing the celestial beings, and hence the Gods asked Shiva to help them. Shiva asked Kali to manifest as Bhadra Kali to defeat the demons. She defeated the demons and drank their blood. As a result, she lost her mind and started terrorizing the celestial beings who sought help again from Shiva. • • Architecture of Sri Vadaranyeswarar Temple • The Lingam in this temple is a Swayambumurthi (self-manifested) and faces east. The presiding deity is called Vadaranyeswarar (Lord of the jungle of the North)/Alavana Nathar/Alankatteesar and is represented by a Shiva Lingam. Natarajar is called Rathina Sabapathi Eswarar, and his consort Sivakami Sundari is called Sameesenambikai. • The main tower (Rajagopuram) has five tiers. The temple has three corridors (prakarams). The first prakaram has a huge hall for Annadhanam and Prasadams prepared at the temple. This leads to the Rajagopuram and the next prakaram.
