Is there a rational explanation for what happened to the Yuba County Five? This week on Solvable Mysteries we tackle one of the most famous mysteries in recent American history, the inexplicable detour of the Yuba County Five into snow-filled mountains in 1978, after attending a basketball game in Chico, California. The group was composed almost entirely of intellectually challenged men, except for the leader of the group, Gary Mathias. They were excited about the game they were scheduled to play the next day, and because of this, it was inexplicable that they made a complete detour into the snowy mountains, instead of returning back to Yuba City, their home. This turned out to be fatal for four of the five, while one, Gary Mathias, remains missing, and is feared dead as well. • On the show today, Juras and Glenn make a close examination of the events of that night, as well as the findings of the search and subsequent investigations after the bodies of four of the five men were found. We discuss the mystery of why Ted Weiher starved and froze to death only feet from food and fire kindling. • We review each leading theory, and weigh in as to what we think is a good clue to solving this California Cold Case, and what might be a distraction or red herring. Finally, we state our opinions on what makes the most sense to explain and solve the events of that night, as well as the mysterious cabin stay in the weeks after. • Chapters: • 0:00 Introduction • 3:39 Setting time period context - no mobile phones, no GPS, just maps • 5:38 Cognitive challenges • 10:50 A trip to Chico • 15:00 A fatal wrong turn up a snowy mountain road • 20:00 A potential clue from another survivor of that night • 25:00 Brownville sighting -- real or red herring? • 26:30 The car is found - but where is the driver and passengers? • 30:30 Bikers find some bodies up in a trailer high in the moutains • 43:00 Questions about the specific mental conditions each person had • 47:00 Another body found • 49:00 Debating the Brownsville sighting • 57:30 About Gary Mathias -- victim or instigator?
