Unveiled 2025 Toyota GR86: Limited Edition You Can't Miss! • Having fun on a budget is still possible, as the Toyota GR86 proves. The GR86 is a little coupe that limps along in a world where compromise is the norm; it has a 228-horsepower flat-four engine, rear-wheel drive, a manual gearbox, and ridiculously small back seats. The spec sheet and corporate focus groups aren't the only places its simplicity and excellent driving experience pay off. The graceful lines, precise steering, and agile handling of the GR86 harken back to an era before driver assistance systems were standard. It may be little in stature, but the cabin is roomy enough (at least for the front seats) and the controls are in the perfect spots. • The 2020 Hakone special edition was a limited run, but Toyota is bringing it back for a second go. Featuring the same Sachs dampers and Brembo brakes with larger-diameter rotors as last year's Trueno edition, this version is based on the Premium trim and offers a manual or automatic transmission as an option. Included in the limited edition package of 860 units are unique colors and 18-inch wheels. Shock absorber tuning, electric power steering, and throttle mapping changes make rev-matching easier on the other GR86 models. • Depending on the model level and available features, the price of a 2025 Toyota GR86 might range from $31,000 to $37,000. We've had great experiences with the Premium trim in the past, and we think the small price hike was well worth it for the upgraded eight-speaker sound system, heated seats, adaptive LED headlights, and fashionable 18-inch rims wrapped in summer performance tires. Here, meanwhile, the Hakone's mechanical enhancements and relative rarity make it impossible to pass up. • The GR86's powertrain is a 2.4-liter Subaru horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine that produces 228 horsepower with natural aspiration. While it's still not a wild beast, it's a significant improvement over the 2.0-liter version from the first generation in terms of power and refinement. The flat-four runs smoothly and steadily within the chassis's limitations. The more powerful engine sounded and felt better on our initial test drive, and the car's lightning-fast handling was thrilling on road and at the Monticello Motor Club race track. • The GR86's cabin has seen some minor upgrades from its predecessor, but it hasn't gotten noticeably roomier. The GR86, like the Subaru BRZ, is one of a kind among budget sports cars because it can seat four people. But there's a big caveat: the back seats are so tiny that you'd be better off using them for groceries and backpacks. However, there is unexpectedly enough of room for front-seat passengers, and the connection between the steering wheel and the shifter is perfect for enthusiastic driving. • Your time spent viewing the AutoFast channel is appreciated.
