Chapter 3 discusses the use of an AED, or automated external defibrillator. The steps of operating an AED are reviewed. The potential readings are also discussed, as well as what to do to ensure the AED is working properly. • An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is a device that recognizes ventricular fibrillation (fahy-bruh-ley-shuh) and other dysrhythmias and delivers an electric shock at the right time. The AED is nearly fool proof and will not allow you to make a mistake. It is safe for anyone to use it. • Now, let’s review the AED steps. • First, retrieve an AED, open it, and turn it on. (They are often stationed in public buildings.) • Next, expose the individual’s chest, dry it, and remove any medication patches. • Then, open the AED pads, peel off the backing, and check for a pacemaker. (Make sure not to place the pads on top of the pacemaker.) • Apply the upper chest pad above the breast and lower left chest pad below the armpit. • Ensure that the wires are attached to the AED box. • Then move away from the individual, stop CPR, and instruct others not to touch the injured or the ill individual. • The AED will analyze the rhythm. If the AED reads to “Check Electrodes,” then ensure that the chest pads are making good contact. If the message reads “Shock,” then clear the individual and press and hold the “shock” button until the AED delivers the shock. • Immediately resume CPR for two minutes after the shock. • Repeat the steps if necessary. • Need certified or rectified in BLS, visit https://disquefoundation.org/bls-cert... • ************************************** • Follow us on social media! • Facebook: / disquefoundation • Twitter: / disquefndn • Instagram: / savealifeinitiative • Pinterest: / disquefoundatio • LinkedIn: / disque-foundation • Website: https://disquefoundation.org/ • To find out more about the Save a Life Initiative and the Disque foundation please visit our site or email us at [email protected] • Together, let’s save lives.
