The pygmy hippo is a small, reclusive mammal native to the dense forests and swamps of West Africa. Unlike its larger cousin, the common hippo, this nocturnal creature spends more time on land, navigating thick vegetation with its sleek skin and webbed toes. Standing just 2.5 to 3 feet tall and weighing around 400 to 600 pounds, it’s an excellent swimmer but prefers a solitary life in the wild. Sadly, the pygmy hippo is critically endangered due to habitat loss and hunting, with fewer than 3,000 left in the wild. It's up to us to protect their habitats and ensure these unique animals survive, and that journey starts by raising awareness about their existence.
