How to Collect Nasopharyngeal Samples for Flu Testing Using COPAN Flocked Swabs • This video is intended for nurses, lab technicians and other clinical staff, and provides simple step by step instructions given by Dr. Aleta Bonner of Dell Children's Hospital in Austin, TX, on using COPAN’s nasopharyngeal flocked swab (FLOQSwabs™) and Universal Transport Media (UTM™) for flu testing on patients of all ages. • COPAN’s UTM™ and FLOQSwabs™ offer a convenient and more comfortable alternative to the nasal aspirate for flu sample collection on patients of all ages. • Specimen collection should be performed by health care personnel who have completed training and demonstrated competency. Always read the manufacturer’s package insert for specific instruction regarding specimen collection and transport for the type of test kit being used. • For best results, follow steps outlined in this video and briefly summarized here: • • Take the disposable ruler supplied by COPAN and place it at the child’s earlobe and measure from there to the base of the nose • • Divide that number in half to determine the appropriate depth of insertion and mark on the swab using a pen or marker • • Have the patient lay back. In younger children, a parent or guardian should hold their hands and forehead to steady the head and prevent injury to both you and the child. • • Beginning at the base of the nose, hold the swab horizontally and insert until the marked depth is reached • • Remove the swab and check for mucus. Note* if no mucus is present insert the swab into the second nare and perform the steps again • • Remove the swab and place it into the transport media • • Break the swab at the red breakpoint and close the tube • • Send the sample to the lab • COPAN’s UTM™, Universal Transport Medium, is a room temperature stable viral transport medium for collection, transport, maintenance and long-term freeze storage of Viruses, such as Influenza H1N1. Using UTM™ in conjunction with a flocked swab which, unlike traditional fiber swabs, have no internal absorbent core to entrap the specimen. The entire sample elutes for superior fluid dynamics for more sensitive influenza testing. • To purchase UTM™ visit: http://www.copanusa.com/products/coll... • To purchase FLOQSwabs™ visit: copanusa.com/products/collection-transport/floqswabs-flocked-swabs/ • CONNECT with us! • Facebook: facebook.com/copan.usa • Twitter: @CopanUSA • Instagram: copan_usa • LinkedIn: linkedin.com/company/332026/
