What does the name Christ mean? • Jesus is most often called by his full name, Jesus Christ, today. Believe it or not, Christ is not the last name of Jesus. Christ is actually a title that means Messiah . Messiah and Christ both mean anointed one. • Christ (Greek) = Messiah (Hebrew) • Christos (Greek) = Anointed One • Messiah (Hebrew) = Anointed One • In the Old Testament the people who were anointed included priests, prophets, and kings. As the Anointed One, Jesus takes on all three roles. • Here is the definition from the Catechism of the Catholic Church: • The word 'Christ' comes from the Greek translation of the Hebrew Messiah, which means 'anointed.' It became the name proper to Jesus only because he accomplished perfectly the divine mission that 'Christ' signifies. In effect, in Israel those consecrated to God for a mission that he gave were anointed in his name. This was the case for kings, for priests and, in rare instances, for prophets.
