In Longido District in the Arusha Region of Tanzania, extreme dry spells are causing drought and land degradation. • The non-economic loss and damage consequences of this include the loss of traditional pastoralist livelihoods and malnutrition (especially of children, affecting their education), while people (especially men and young people) are being forced to migrate, disrupting community and family life, risking conflict and leaving those left behind vulnerable. • This video explores those issues and how innovations at community and household level are helping communities to cope. • This case study is part of a wider collection illustrating climate-driven ‘non-economic loss and damage’ in Africa, Asia and the Pacific Islands, aimed at policymakers and practitioners. • The impacts (including loss of cultural identity, impaired physical and mental wellbeing, social disruption, and more) cannot be avoided via adaptation or mitigation action, yet are often overlooked because they are hard to monetise. • See the collection of case studies: https://www.iied.org/21891iied • The video was authored by Fredrick Andrew Shija, communication officer, Sokoine Memorial Foundation. The author wishes to thank Longido District Council, Gift Mijoe, Ally Msangi, Daniel Mollel, Dr Samson Msiru and Milliary Parmao for their support.
