And that's why we've opened the COVID Antibody Infusion Clinic, to help COVID positive patients who are at high risk for hospitalization and severe symptoms. When someone is infected with coronavirus, our bodies build up antibodies, which are proteins that target the virus, and neutralize it, preventing it from getting into our cells and replicating and causing symptoms. • MASSA ZANTAH: It's really a race between the virus and the immune system. Sometimes, in some patients, they're not able to produce these antibodies fast enough, and that's where these monoclonal antibody therapies are helpful in these patients to boost their immune system and prevent the disease from progressing. • JAMIE GARFIELD: In high-risk patients, who are at risk for progression to more severe symptoms and hospitalization, these therapies reduce their symptoms more quickly and prevent the likelihood of them being hospitalized and having more severe disease. These monoclonal antibody therapies are approved for anyone who is considered high risk for progression. • MASSA ZANTAH: No, you shouldn't wait. The earlier you receive these therapies, the more effective they are. Once you have severe symptoms of COVID-19, you're no longer eligible for this therapy. The point of COVID-19 antibody therapy is to reduce the chance of you having severe disease. Do not wait until your symptoms start to get worse. • JAMIE GARFIELD: This therapy is offered under what is called the FDA's Emergency Use Authorization. This means that the FDA put together a panel of experts and weighed the risks and benefits, and felt that the benefits strongly outweighed the risks. • MASSA ZANTAH: If you're not eligible for this therapy, Temple Lung Center has a variety of clinical trials that are available for patients who test positive for COVID-19 disease. As a physician treating COVID-19 patients every day in the hospital, I have witnessed how much this disease has an impact on patients, their families, physicians, and hospitals. So I think shifting the care towards preventing the disease from progressing and treating these patients very early in the course is game-changing. And it's very exciting for us.
