Converting Grey Iron into Ductile Iron is one of the most exciting and explosive steps in our foundries. When just the right amount of magnesium is added to a ladle of molten recycled iron some chemical magic happens. In a flash of light and heat the material structure of the Grey Iron is changed. It's graphite flakes melt and reform as spherical nodules in this highly controlled industrial setting, producing a stronger more flexible nodular cast iron, better known as Ductile Iron.
