The Montiers were a trailblazing Philadelphia family who were among the first African-American landowners in Pennsylvania. They are descendants of Philadelphia’s first mayor, Humphrey Morrey, appointed by William Penn in 1691. This in itself would place them prominently in Philadelphia’s history. This is not just a piece of Philadelphia history; it’s an American story. • 0:00 Humphrey Morrey, First Mayor of Philadelphia • 4:15 Cremona Moorey (Cremona Satterthwaite) • 8:55 The Montier Home • 14:22 The Montier Cemetery • 17:20 Elizabeth and Hiram Montier • 22:55 Cyrus Bustill, Paul Robeson • About WHYY: • WHYY is the leading public media organization in the Philadelphia Region, including Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and beyond.
