In this video, you'll learn how to incorporate a budget versus actual maintenance cost variance value into a time series clustered column chart in Power BI. • By explicitly showing the variance between the cost and the actual, you'll be able to quickly see the difference. • Normally you'd have to ... • ... look at the budget • ... then look at the actual values • ... and then internally calculate the difference in your head (not always easy!) • That process takes time and more importantly 'cognitive load' making it a little bit harder and more effort to interpret the data. • Displaying the difference explicitly will speed up and simplify your charts and make it far simpler for the person reading the chart to interpret the data. • That's not all! To further improve the ease and speed of perception I'll then add an up-down arrow and some colour conditional formatting to the budget vs actual maintenance cost variance label. This will really make it really stand out in months when the cost is over the budget. • I've used budget vs actual cost, but this approach can be used whenever you are displaying multiple columns on a clustered column chart in Power BI. • Another couple of good use cases for this, from a maintenance work management point of view would be: • 1.) Schedule attainment in a week - show the number of work order schedule vas the number completed. The variance will show the number not completed. • 2.)
