It was introduced in 2003 as a 2004 model, replacing the Familia/323/Protegé in the C-segment. A performance-oriented version of the Mazda3 was marketed as the Mazdaspeed3 in North America, Axela in Japan, and the Mazda 3 MPS in Europe and Australia. • - • For the first time in the Philippines, Mazda is now offering mild-hybrid models in the form of the 2022 Mazda3. Called the M Hybrid system, it's a significant improvement over the i-eloop system found in the Mazda3, Mazda6, and MX-5. It makes use of a DC/DC converter, an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG), and a Regenerative Friction Brake Coordination system with a new 24-volt M Hybrid Lithium-Ion battery. The result is improved power output from the 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G engine. It now produces 164 PS (+9 PS) and 213 Nm of torque (+13Nm) which Mazda says will translate to improved fuel economy and more dynamic power delivery. The new M Hybrid system is available in both the Sedan and Fastback body styles. But for that prefer a naturally-aspirated engine, the 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G is still available and continues to generate 155 PS and 200 Nm of torque.
