A rather glib description might be that if Tolkien were to equate with Tolstoy (epic, expansive, fantasies that span great landscapes) then Peake would be equivalent to Dostoevsky - intense, psychological, interior and Gothic. • These adaptations are all-star stuff, with names like Bernard Hepton, David Warner, Judy Parfitt and Eleanor Bron. They are accompanied by Sting in the critical role of Steerpike, so you can't have everything. The plays are also the work of the late, great Glyn Dearman as director, and Brian Sibley who adapted the books. Amongst a lengthy Cv, Sibley adapted many a fantasy work for BBC radio, including The Lord of the Rings, and more recently he returned to Peake's work to create brand new adaptations of them, completing the saga by finally including the third and fourth novels in the series. However, I still prefer the extraordinary atmosphere of these 1980s versions... • MYSTERIOUS MAGPIE is a channel devoted to ghost and horror stories on British radio, and to dark tales of every kind.
