These two institutes use NEST as a sole criterion for admission to their undergraduate programs. • NISER Bhubaneswar: • The National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) is a public research institute in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India, under the umbrella of the Indian Department of Atomic Energy. The institute is affiliated with Homi Bhabha National Institute. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh (served 2004–2014), laid the foundation stone on August 28, 2006. Government of India earmarked an initial outlay of ₹823.19 crore (US$100 million) during the first seven years of the project, starting in September 2007. It was ranked second in the country by the Nature Index 2020. • UM-DAE CEBS: • The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India and the University of Mumbai, Vidyanagari Campus jointly launched, in September 2007, a Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (CEBS) offering high-quality undergraduate teaching embedded in a postgraduate and research environment. CEBS offers a five-year Integrated M.Sc. program in the Basic Sciences for students who have completed 10+2 schooling or its equivalent. • A modern, flexible, integrated and seamless curriculum has been developed that places considerable emphasis on practical training and development of analytical and problem-solving skills in addition to formal learning. Some of the best teachers from University of Mumbai departments and University of Mumbai-affiliated colleges, and from proximate partner institutions likeBhabha Atomic Research Centre, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, IIT Bombay and the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, have helped design courses and are participating in teaching activities of the Centre in the areas of physics, life sciences, mathematics, chemistry. • CEBS is an autonomous centre and is governed by a Council chaired by The Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy and co-chaired by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Mumbai. Other members of the Council include the Directors of BARC, TIFR and IIT Mumbai, and the Joint Secretary (R D) of DAE, Government of India. The complete list of members of the Governing Council are available on this website. Professor Deepak Mathur was the first Director appointed at CEBS and Professor S.M. Chitre the first Chairperson of the CEBS Academic Board. The current CEBS Director is Dr. Vimal Kumar Jain. • • Integrated MSc program: • Students get selected for the Integrated M.Sc. programme through a competitive annual examination called the National Entrance Screening Test (NEST). The first batch was admitted in September 2007. Admissions are highly selective: for instance, from more than 80,000 applicants nationwide in 2018, about 1,000 students were considered for admission to a cohort of approximately 200 students. Over the years, the exam has increasingly gained popularity among students aiming for a career in the sciences and has gotten increasingly competitive. It was estimated (in 2018) that more than 1,00,000 students will apply per year (in the following few years) to seek admission in any of the two institutions that admit students via NEST (NISER and CeBS). • • #nest #niser #nest2024 #cebs • _______________________________________
