Palm Beach - 1965 Gateway Marathon • Wynne Driven Maritime '65 Gateway - Win is 1st Metal Hull Victory • Three weeks after the Miami-Nassau race, winner Don Aronow and defending world champion Jim Wynne locked into a devastating sea battle in the 180-mile Gateway Marathon from West Palm Beach, Florida to Grand Bahama Island and return, with the bearded Wynne prevailing in the new 32' aluminum Maritime. • With co-designers Wynne and Walt Walters and unlimited hydroplane ace Don Wilson aboard, Maritime averaged 48.9mph to edge out Aronow in a new 28' Donzi called 008 in the two day May 29-31, 1965 event. Maritime's power was two turbocharged 400hp Daytona engines. • It was the first time that a metal hull had won a major offshore powerboat contest. For the second time on the 1965 U.S. circuit the wooden Prowler Miss Amazon sank, sending its mother-daughter team of Rene and Gale Jocoby into the water. • Except from Searace by John O. Crouse. • • https://www.floridamemory.com/items/s... • This film shows the commerce and community of the West Palm Beach area and asserts that, whether it's nature, recreation, fashion, or industry, West Palm Beach has something for everyone.
