We've seen glass before from the likes of Apple and Samsung, and this is the more typical of the two new devices. The Onyx backplate is cut from a sheet of glass and then polished to a smooth finish. • The Onyx has rounded edges to the display and the rear, curving to meet the metal edge for a quality finish. It's very glossy and shiny and within a few minutes of handling, it was covered in fingerprints. There's no doubt that you'll be regularly polishing this phone to keep it looking its best. • But it does look great. Setting it next to the Nexus 5X and the HTC One A9, it's almost staggering to think it's half the price. That's not reflected in the build and materials. On first impression, the OnePlus X Onyx is going to get a lot of people excited and turn a lot of heads. • OnePlus X Ceramic • The zirconia ceramic backplate is sourced from materials in Australia, and goes through a forming process that takes nearly a month. It involves grinding, forming, baking and cooling, with OnePlus telling us that it's a tricky material to work with, so only 20 out of every 100 backplates actually get used. • When you think about ceramics, you probably think about whites or more earthy colours, but like the Onyx, the Ceramic handset is also black. At first glance it's difficult to tell these handsets apart. There's a slight difference in the surface, with the Ceramic offering an even more reflective finish, a shine that looks to come from even deeper within the material, although they pretty much feel the same in the hand. • For those who look closely, however, you'll find that the Ceramic handset is cut at a slight angle towards the edges, looking a little more chamfered compared to the curve of the Onyx. • Ceramic results in a very hard finish, so that glossy shine should be maintained throughout its life, whereas the glass may be more prone to scratching over time. It's too early to judge however. As they say, time will tell. • There's a difference in weight: the Onyx weighs 138g and the Ceramic is 160g. You'll feel that heft when you pick it up, but it's a subtle difference between these devices. The Ceramic might impart a higher sense of quality, but there's a chance that only you'll know about it. • That might be a moot point however. With the Onyx priced at £199 and the Ceramic at £269, neither of these handsets is expensive. The real value of the Ceramic, perhaps, is that only 10,000 will be made, so it might be hard to get one. Some will say it's a waste of money, others will say that it's an unquestionable necessity.
