These are some of the areas of the production and creative team involved in the 1961 film West Side Story. • The sheer brilliance of West Side Story as a production, on the set in front of, and behind the camera was an example of pure genius. The immense talent/artistry involved is rarely achieved. • This past week saw the birthday/anniversary of Jerome Robbins, Born 11th October 1918 – Died 29th July 1998, Manhattan, NYC, USA, Aged 79 years. • Mr. Robbins spoke of Mr. Bernstein’s musical genius. • “The one thing about Lenny’s music which was so tremendously important, was that there always was a kinetic motor—there was a power in the rhythms of his work, or the change of rhythms in his work and the orchestration—which had a need for it to be demonstrated by dance.” • The musical genius Leonard Bernstein passed away 30 years ago on October 14th, 1990, Manhattan, NYC, USA, Aged 72 years. • I am not shocked when I speak to younger dancers today who don’t know who Mr. Robbins and Mr. Bernstein are, including their great contribution to the arts. • They may have long gone, but their legacy and contribution will be here for those generations that will and do appreciate what they gave to the Arts. • On being an Artist, Mr. Bernstein perfectly sums it up. He left us with that beautiful feeling from his incredible music. • “The key to the mystery of a great artist is that for reasons unknown, he will give away his energies and his life just to make sure that one note follows another…and leaves us with the feeling that something is right in the world.” • West Side Story, 1961.
