Snakes who remained still, who didn’t respond to environmental and internal stimuli in order to survive would die. In confinement when snakes no longer have to use 100 percent of their energy budget to survive and reproduce because we are providing them easily accessible food, water, shelter, and the ability to thermoregulate without having to move very much, they will use that energy for other things. Of course, there will be variability among species and among individuals of the same species as to how they adapt their behavioral repertoire to captive environments, some will move around and seek novel experiences more than others. This Cornsnake, who we affectionately named “Normal”, uses the full extent of his habitat AND seeks freedom from his enclosure on a regular basis despite the environmental complexity of his living space. Our three other Cornsnakes his same age vary in their preferred activities, with two of them fully using all the space in their habitats without seeking to come out, and another spending much of his time hiding, using his habitat space for short periods at a time. The key is to get to know your individual snakes, give them choices so that you can determine their individual preferences, and endeavor to give them what the logic of their behavior is telling you they need.
