Make sure to hit max resolution in your settings to see the grain in all its glory. I was shooting at an F8, for these shots. I was using a sekonic 398 light meter set a dash over 200 asa. The meter indicated to expose at F22 in the sun, f16 in the shade. I purposefully over exposed 1 stop becasue film loves over exposure, not under exposure (the exact opposite of digital.) • I wanted to film Melika in shade + direct sunlight and see how the stock handled the latitude. There was SO MUCH information in the highlights and shadows, it blew me away. Film is so superior to digital. You can grade this stock any way you want with a 12 bit scan, so I just pushed things a little higher right to the point of seeing things get messy. (I picked my light meter up on ebay for $150, they list for 250.) • https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc... • Found a pretty decent looking H16 Bolex on Ebay, which the owner had listed low for $250, because they were unsure of it's functionality. From the pictures I could tell it was in great shape and was willing to make the gamble. Got the camera into my pocession and knew it really only needed a CLA. I sent it off and for $350 (and a 2 month turn around, sigh) got it back and it's in damn near pristine condition now. Be careful you don't overspend on buying a bolex. Some of them are priced insanely because they sellers are depending on buyers lack of confidence in refurbshing one themselves with a third party. If the camera you're looking at has a super 16mm modification, that would be the ONLY reason to pay more as it can run you $1000 alone to change that gate out w Bolex or a third party manufacturer. However, Im going to show/explain/educate in another video, cropping from the normal 16mm gate is FULLY possible without losing damn near anything when youre framing for it in camera. Especially considering the curve of the frame and perforation already requireingyou to crop anyway. The only thing that changes is you get a TINY bit more grain in your image-- however the whole reason Im shooting 16mm in the first place is to get that organic feel. I like the grain. So cropping to a 16:9 image is not only possible, but looks BETTER if you shoot a 16mm single perf gate. • The camera came with a few very long lenses, and I prefer to shoot wide shots. My prefered full frame camera lens is a 24mm. To get that same FOV on a Bolex, I would need to acquire a much wider lens than a 24 to compensate, but ultimately these types of wide lenses are crazily priced on ebay and rarer than rare. So I searched out alternatives. Low and behold, there are fully glass c mount lenses built for surveilance cameras!! All of the 16mm bolex forums alude to not using these because they claim the image quality will be effected-- these guys are going back and forth telling people because the lens is designed for video there will be abberations and softness, and it wont fit the plane. But I did the quick math of the specs, the gate and the film plane are the same if not wider mesaurement of the lenses FOV and whats beaming through the cameras prism. (Think aps-c cameras using a full frame lens) I again decided to take the risk and see whats what for myself. Here are the results! Fantastic image quality in my opinion, you can see, VERY sharp on the close up of her, and in the wide theres PLENTY of detail in the leaves and rocks. I purchased a Computar 12mm f1.4 (which is the equivalent of 24mm on a full frame cine camera.) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00... • Everywhere 16mm single perfr film was sold out. B H, different film houses etc. I called up Kodak and asked, what's the wait period on ordering film-- they told me, you can order rolls right now, we have plenty available. So for $55 per roll ($20 cheaper than third party) I was able to just place an order directly. I got 4 rolls of 250D and 1 roll of 500T. Recieved everything in 5 days. Unreal. Go straight to kodak to order, don't waste your time with third party. https://www.kodak.com/en/motion/page/... • I got my footage developed and scanned at Cinelab in MA for $100/100ft scanned at 2.5k resolution. They turned around in 7 days, but only because they were moving equipment around, the owner told me it's usually faster. • https://www.cinelab.com • I was testing if the camera was in working order and happy to find out it IS, so there's more footage to come. Rather than wait to assemble everything in one big video essay Im planning to release, I figured it'd be cool to upload as I get stuff back. • I recorded this audio myself using a Zoom H5 and a Boya shotgun mic. I was more than pleased with the quality which only required small EQ tweaks in post. • https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09PNJH2LZ?... • https://www.amazon.com/Zoom-H5-Four-T...
