Last month Buck was discovered by a neighbor of Tami Augustyn on White Rock Road at Bulldog. Buck was in a trash bag left for dead as temperatures the night before hovered in the 30's. As the neighbor drove by he noticed the trash bag tied to a metal fence post move and investigated. After he discovered Buck in the bag bleeding and shot in the face with birdshot he immediately went down the street and notified Tammi who he knew was a dog lover. • Tammi took Buck to a veterinary clinic in Conroe who stabilized him. He was hypothermic and severely dehydrated. His face and eyes were full of birdshot. • In the weeks following Buck has visited several veterinarians for his care. Dr. Rainbow was able to do surgery on his eyes to repair the damage to them. He remains blind to this date but has fantastic hearing and is able to move around freely. • Last week Dr, Ryan Buck, the Chief Operating Officer of Gulf Coast Veterinary Services on the West Loop in Houston offered their services free of charge. Up to this point vet bills have mounded to well over $6,000 all of which had been covered by the generosity of thousands who sat the story on Buck. His Facebook page shot up to over 50,000 within a week. • / buckneedsbucks • Wednesday Tami took Buck for a consultation with Dr. Chanda Miles who specializes in Veterinary Dentistry. The main concern was a tooth described as the color of a old potato. Worried about infection and a hole that was found by Dr. Drow of the Ponderosa Veterinary Clinic. • After an examination and complete set of x-ray's Dr. Chanda advised Tammi that a root canal would be in order. The tooth was damaged but could be saved. She described the procedure of drilling into the tooth, filing away the pulp inside it and then cleansing it with bleach. From there a substance would fill the tooth and the points that were drilled into the tooth would be filled. • When she further examined the hole in Buck's gum she noted on the x-ray what appeared to be at least three pellets of birdshot. Those pellets could be acting as an irritant and preventing the gum from healing. She also would plan to remove those. • Amazingly Dr. Chanda explained how bad not just bones but rawhide and even chew products to keep dogs teeth clean can also lead to extensive tooth damage. She explained that a dogs jaw exerts such a massive amount of pounds per square inch that the tooth enamel cannot hold up to it. • She noted that the life of a wild dog or wolf was estimated to be approximately 5 to 6 years due to the fact that they do chew on many bones as they eat their prey. Those bones destroy their teeth and without care can actually infect the animal. • Buck, who Dr. Chanda estimated to be approximately 18 months old by looking at his teeth is scheduled in the nea future for the surgery to repair his tooth. • As of this date the culprit responsible for this act against Buck has not been identified.
