In the Catholic definition, a heresy is the obstinate denial or doubt of a truth that must be believed after baptism. It differs from apostasy, the total rejection of the Christian faith; and schism, which is the refusal to submit to the authority of the Pope or to be in communion with the members of the Church subject to him. Heretics choose to follow new and false beliefs, their private revelation. • An early heretic is second century Marcion. He created his own scriptural canon of 11 edited books, minus Old Testament. His form of Gnosticism, Marcionism, rejected the Old Testament God as an evil secondary divinity. Christ came from the true God to rescue this world. He was excommunicated. We know his views via polemics against him.
