We headed to Bécal from the city of San Francisco de Campeche. It's basically on the state line of Campeche and Yucatan. When most people think of the word Sombrero, they think of one of these big, bright, fun hats. In reality , Sombrero is just Spanish for hat. Since the weather in Bécal is hot and dry, the palm fibers become brittle and impossible to weave. This leads to the weaving being done in underground caves. • Both the history and geography, of these Jipijappa or Panama hats, are kind of confusing. But here is what we learned. The hats became popular, and were called 'Panama Hats,' when the workers building the Panama Canal needed high quality hats, to protect them from the sun. They are also called Jipijappa, after the city in Equador, (which also translates to Panama), where some of the nicest ones are made.
