We headed to Bécal from the city of San Francisco de Campeche. It's basically on the state line of Campeche and Yucatan. When most people think of the word Sombrero, they think of one of these big, bright, fun hats. In reality , Sombrero is just Spanish for hat. And in our opinion, one of the coolest hats is the jipijapa hat, or jipi hat, or Panama hat, which is made by hand in the small city of Becal, in the state of Campeche, in Mexico. • Today’s Mexico travel vlog is the BEST guide to Bécal, Campeche Mexico! Today we are searching Becal, for a jipi japa hat of our own, and we want to learn all about the process of making one along the way. • In Bécal many people have these beautiful plants in their backyard. Since the weather in Bécal is hot and dry, the palm fibers become brittle and impossible to weave. This leads to the weaving being done in underground caves. • Both the history and geography, of these Jipijappa or Panama hats, are kind of confusing. But here is what we learned. The hats became popular, and were called 'Panama Hats,' when the workers building the Panama Canal needed high quality hats, to protect them from the sun. They are also called Jipijappa, after the city in Equador, (which also translates to Panama), where some of the nicest ones are made. These hats are known by both names in Mexico, even though the plants used for the hats, were first introduced to Becal, by a priest from Guatemala. • Today we provide a tour and and the history of Mexico's Jipi Japa Sombrero Capital. You can use this as a guide for the best things to see and do when you go to Becal. This travel vlog covers where and how the Jipy hats are made in Bécal Campeche (Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico). • In case you are new here, we are Will and Katy and we are a married couple that hopes to show you what it is like to travel and shop around the world in 2022! • * * * * * * * * * • What could possibly be next? • Subscribe to our channel.
